Pictoplasma : The Missing Link

11/22/2011

My Yeti character “Tukino” has been selected to be a part of the upcoming Missing link exhibition as a part of the Paris Pictoplasma exhibition. He is one of 500 selected pieces out of over 5000+ submissions.
The Exhibition will be at the Gaite Lyrique – http://www.gaite-lyrique.net/ from the 7th -31st December 2011

Pictoplasma is the world’s leading organisation dedicated to contemporary character design and art in all its many facets and media. By collecting, examining and making comparable an endless figurative image production, even the slightest shift in recurring motifs becomes readable – and allows surprising conclusions to underlaying topics and current zeitgeist trends. And suddenly they seem to be everywhere: white, hairy, friendly creatures, just feature-less enough to serve as the perfect empty screen for the viewers to project their own narration, yet exactly the right amount of hairiness, to make you want to get into physical cuddle-mode.
We can’t avoid being reminded of all those archetypical Big Foot, Abominable Snowman and Yeti legends – one of the last mysterious entities without a clear depiction in our culture of visual overdose and instant google-search gratification.
As a research project we have asked international artists, designers and illustrators to share their graphical character designs of the Yeti, Big Foot, Sasquatch, Albino Werewolf, Meh-teh, Nuk-luk, Yeren – and have accidentally unleashed an avalanche of hairy creatures: We have received more than 5000+ entries from all round the globe, with sightings occurring in Finland, the Iran, South Africa, Chile, Korea, Russia, North Carolina, New Zealand, and everywhere in between…Our initial plan was to condense all of the received imaginary portraits to their platonic ideal, hoping to get a better understanding of one of our time’s last secret characters. Will we succeed?
The result will be presented as an art installation at the heart of the upcoming Pictoplasma Paris Exhibition at la Gaîté lyrique, taking place during the month of December.
And this is my entry “Tukino”
Tukino is a pretty shy kind of a fellow, he lives on Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand, at the top of the Whangaehu glacier. He is often seen by climbers and trampers, but he doesn’t eat them-being a vegetarian. He sleeps during the day buried in the snow, and during the evenings he pops down tot he Tongariro crossing for a light snack of Heather and Reticulated Coprosma. During the long summer months he digs into the summit of either of the three peaks and waits for it to snow again.

Oldschool Newschool

11/22/2011

My work, Massey University celebrated 125 years since the development of the first art and design school in New Zealand. I was heavily involved in the development of the digital content for the exhibition and part of the development team. I also have two f my works featured within the exhibition. Toy sculpture “Richard Henry” and wearable arts costume “Kanak”.

These are a selection of images of the exhibition, unfortunately the digital components don’t really photograph well, but they were very cool little mini theatres in a box.

” From the School of Design established by Arthur Riley in 1886 to the Technical School of Art and the Wellington Polytechnic that followed, for 125 years the College of Creative Arts has been producing designs that work. While some designers may not be known by name, their products will be recognised, and indeed are probably used daily across the globe, without reference to the creative intelligence that produced them. “

The Doll Show

11/22/2011

I have work in another exhibition- The Doll Show at Expressions Gallery, Upper Hutt, Wellington.

The Doll Show 25th November – 23rd January
The doll is a seemingly naive object we often associate with child’s play, however this exhibition focuses on the doll as an object symbolically used in artistic practice. The artists featured in this exhibition utilise doll-like objects to create a narrative or story which explores deeper underlying issues associated with identity, culture and politics.

It opens this week, so I will post some pictures soon…

From the 3rd to the 9th of September 2011 Wellingtonians and New Zealanders will tune into some of the creative’s that have helped make the New Zealand film industry what it is today.

Within the Wellington film industry there are hundreds of artists working collectively to create some of finest films made in the world. ‘Unscripted’ aims to profile these brilliant minds to present their talent as individuals, in mediums ranging from illustration, jewellery, costume, sculpture and 3D animation and many more.

Oscar winning Production Designer, Dan Hennah states, “It is wonderful to see an exhibition that showcases the creative individuals that work in film. Our industry is by nature collaborative and it is great to see the artists that have come together with passion for film and what they do for a real job. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with these talented people and celebrate the innovation of ‘Unscripted’ in focusing our attention on their individual talents.”
On the 2nd of September, The St James Theatre first floor gallery will be transformed for a VIP industry opening event with an anticipated 350+ guests and live entertainment. The exhibition will open to the public for one week following.

Ra Vincent, Greg Broadmore, Ivan Vostinar, Rebecca Asquith, Ryan Rogers and Steph Lusted to name a few. Greg Broadmore, senior conceptual artist states, “Working in the Wellington film industry for over 10 years, I’ve met hundreds of creative talents. Their names adorn the credit reels of our collaborative works, but a vast amount of personal work is often never seen. The ‘Unscripted’ Exhibition represents an incredible opportunity to delve into this wealth of creative work. I cannot wait to see and for others to see the variety and skill on offer.”

The Unscripted project is just the start of an ongoing concept that will promote the unique creativity of artists working within the film industry. It will give film industry technicians a platform to showcase their talents not only to potential art buyers, but also to film-makers who are searching for specific talents or inspiration.

The aim is to help sustain technicians working in a very contract based industry, and ensure that more brilliant films and art come out of New Zealand.

Ernest is an awkward fellow, he’s middle class in society but wants to be taken more seriously by his peers, unfortunately he takes the wrong advice and dons  a ghastly ensemble for his first appearance in society.

more new dolls

10/24/2011

I’ve been busy lately with plenty of new dolls both for Niada www.niada.org and the Blloom creative industries show -  http://www.blooom.de/

A boy and his Gryphon was showcased at the annual NIADA conference in Denver this year, and is now off to their new home in Chicago. The Virgin Queen and Ernest are on their way to Blloom. A Boy and his Gyphon is a part of a set of gryphon’s pieces I am working on documenting the relationship between the two characters as their grow up and train together for services in combat. I am hoping to develop the pieces into a wider narrtive with other characters, but at present am happy to just explore oppertunities through these two.

Virgin Queen is another piece surrounding the possible symbolism connection between Elizabeth I and her coat or arms.
